One of the World's Biggest Movie Markets Is Not Where You Would Expect

If you were asked to name a movie about Africa off the top of your head, odds are pretty good it would be one about South Africa: Invictus or Cry Freedom or even District 9. South Africa's struggle with apartheid is great fodder for cinematic drama, and its large Caucasian population spells good roles for our predominantly white movie stars.

The rest of Africa remains mostly absent in Hollywood films. When American movies do take us to that mysterious continent, it is almost always through the eyes

If a nation is at red alert, yet a terror group like Boko Haram strikes at will and ups the number of its victims, then such a country is obviously a cassava republic that cannot guarantee security of lives and property.

While Aso Rock makes noise about the determination of the government to bring back the abducted Chibok girls and also to finally thumb Boko Haram, the group continues to strike audaciously as it pleases – in Borno (four times, with the recent killing of forty soldiers and policemen), Kano and Plateau (twice).

On the Saturday that I took my family to the Lagos premiere of the film adaptation of my novel Half of a Yellow Sun, I watched my parents and tried to hide my anxiety. I wondered what they would make of it, but my worry went beyond the film. It was similar, in its sense of unformed discomfort, to what I felt when I first showed my father the finished manuscript.
